Search Engine Optimisation is process of developing strategys by using internet technology and internet marketing techniques to drive customers to your website from search engines.

In this first tip we will explain how to create website links which are useful for search engines as well your customers thus driving traffic to your website.

We will use an example link of www.internet.com/3463gdu/wdee. For this example URL lets assume it contains content on internet hosting packages. As you can see from this link most of us will know that the website is called internet.com but most won’t know that it is a direct link to internet.com’s wdee directory which itself is stored in a parent directory called 3463gdu. Now if you look at the link logically can straight know it does’nt mean anything to you. Why? Because lets assume you have never visited the site before, so you really don’t know what the link is and even more important what it contains i.e. what content. Now search engines too wont understand what this link means. Because just like the human did, a search engine will just see it as a random string or random letters and numbers. So if you don’t understand it how do you expect the search engines to understand it? After all we are smarter than search engines.

So for this link in our example it is safe to call it a bad link. Because it will most likely not show up in the top results when you do a search in a search engine. Also whats important is what is contained in the page, so if the page does not contain the keywords internet, hosting or packges, then you will have even harder time for your website to show up if someone types internet hosting packages in search engines. This is because search engines also scan the pages and see if the keywords in search queries are also contained in the page on top of the link, meta tags and titles etc. Anyway for this post we wont go too much into other elements. So lets stick to links.

The solution for this link problem we have displayed in this example i.e.  www.internet.com/3463gdu/wdee is to change the link into something more readable and which has more value to humans and search engines such as www.internet.com/internet-hosting-packages. Now the way we wrote it is that the internet-hosting-packages is a directory however it can also be a page such www.internet.com/internet-hosting-packages.html or server page such as PHP or ASP. This will not affect the value of the link. One last thing to add is the link ALT text. This is for when a user hovers over the link an information box will be displayed. For this example we can also use the same text as our link, so ALT would be internet hosting packages or some marketing junk like ‘we are the best’.

Also remember for our example you page should have higher results now usually only if someone searches for internet hosting packages. However this is dependant aswell as to the page content. So if you want to rank higher only for the keyword internet, you don’t need hosting and packages.
